Fallout Shelter Tour
War and Pieces is a remarkable sculpture by Dutch artist Bouke de Vries depicting an epic battle–complete with mushroom cloud–on Hillwood's dining room table this fall. In the early 1960s, when nuclear war was an everyday fear, Marjorie Post built four fallout shelters at Hillwood, one of which has been restored. Enjoy a rare look at the renovated shelter intended to keep Post and her staff safe.
Please note that the fallout shelter, located in the mansion's basement, is a relatively small space, accessible only via stairs and narrow corridors.
Tickets are distributed at the visitor center upon opening each day. A limited number of tickets may be pre-reserved by phone by Hillwood members. This docent-led tour is limited to fifteen, and meets and ends in the entry hall. The group will spend approximately ten minutes in the fallout shelter, plus travel time.
